Percent White Vote for Clinton in NC (none / 0)

That is danger territory for Obama. Depending on the overall total of the white vote for Clinton, that is  definitely danger territory for a close loss for Obama in NC.

Re: Percent White Vote for Clinton in NC (none / 0)

Well, the white vote numbers are only for those who don't have college education. Presumably Obama did noticeably better with more educated voters (that's the trend).

I don't get it.. (none / 0)

College educated people are not necessarily smarter or more immune to layoffs, job displacement, illness.

Maybe they are gullible, though, to people telling them that they MUST prefer a certain candidate - even when its against their economic interest.

Re: I don't get it.. (2.00 / 1)

This is just me arm-chair generalizing, but in my experience, the following pattern seems to be true:

College educated people are less likely to believe things like muslim smear campaigns; less likely to have racial issues; less likely to think it matters that Rev. Wright screams and hollers; more likely to have a mature conception of patriotism that isn't vulnerable to Hannity-style attacks; and less likely to buy into "elitist" frames; less likely to be persuaded by shameless pandering; and more likely to be moved by reformist rhetoric.

I think a similar tendency applies to younger people.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX (2.00 / 1)

If these exit numbers hold up -
(And exit polls are notoriously iffy)
Then Obama is in real trouble in NC.
by johnnygunn on Tue May 06, 2008 at 05:49:08 PM EST

I wouldn't say real trouble (none / 0)

But the NC victory would be nothing like SC or VA.

If AAs make up 33% of the electorate and they are going 92% for Obama, Clinton would need to get around 70% of the white vote to pull out a virtual tie with a slim margin of victory.  She hasn't received that anywhere to my knowledge.

If these numbers hold up, I expect he would win the state by about 6% to 8%.  What could give Clinton close to a tie is if black voters made up a smaller share of the final tally (say 28%).  The preference ratios of demographics seem in line with what one would expect at this point so I don't see much changing of them unless substantial numbers of her working age demographics haven't come to the polls yet.

she only gets to 70% of the white vote consistently in Appalachia.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX (none / 0)

yea, exit polls are extremely iffy. but I'm not sure there's anything in these numbers that justify saying he's in trouble.

For one, 33% of election day voters being black is a good thing for Obama. Especially if you believe that 40% of early voters were black. I imagine that the percentage of black voters will come out to around 35/36%.

Secondly, white voters with college degrees will stabalize the disparity of white voters without college degrees.

If I'm obama, I'm more worried about the IN exit polls.

Like I told my mom... (2.00 / 4)

...White male voters are the swing voters in this election.

26% among white voters period isn't going to win a single election, but congratulations because we Democrats will feel good because we're about to nominate a black candidate who can't win in November.

And before the charges of racism start flying, I'm black so you can't play the race card against me.

Re: Like I told my mom... (none / 0)

"26% among white voters period isn't going to win a single election, "

And you think that 8% among black voters will win anything?

Plus, like usual, am betting that Clinton has been getting the usual Republican influx per Rush recommendations, so part of her numbers are not actually hers but a loan from McCain.

We are arguing demographics (none / 0)

because one coaltion has threatened to torpedo the party if it doesn't get what it wants and spokespersons from that side started doing that early in the campaign.  Now the other coalition has picked up that mantle and demonstrated in repeated pollings that their numbers of defections are even more sigificant.

This is the problem with basing nominations on demographics and identity politics. Now both sides are stubbornly resolute.  If people would have voted based on their perceptions of the best candidate on multiple dimensions instead of tribalism, we might at least have had a less bitter and damaging primary.

even if you were white I wouldn't play the race card but it's interesting you don't think that Obama doesn't have a chance to win in November? He very much has a chance and despite all that has gone down with Wright, he's still beating McCain in head to heads.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX (2.00 / 1)

These numbers can't be right, they are a bigger divide than was PA or OH, for the non-college voters.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX (none / 0)

But Rev. Wright has been an issue longer.  And Clinton has moved in a more economically populist direction.

We seem to be getting an even bigger black/working class white divide, although many more working class whites appear to be voting for Obama than African Americans of all classes voting for Clinon.

90 plus % of the African American vote is amazing, but understandable.

The primary is becoming the identity primary, or maybe it always was.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX (none / 0)

i have to agree that there is a large number of voters with degrees who will go overwhelmingly for Obama.  Also he is winning the economy vote in NC.  My thought is that since the economy is the biggest issue that the results on that question will most likely mirror the results.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX [UPDATED] (none / 0)

Next week Hillary crushes Obama in West Virginia.  I mean really blows him out and that dominates the media for a week unless Al Gore endorses Obama.

The following week they split Oregon and Kentucky but Hillary wins Kentucky in another crushing display of white working class popularity.

Then on to Puerto Rico, I have no idea who wins therem

But then Clinton finishes strong with Montana and South Dakota.

Re: EXIT Poll Data from FOX [UPDATED] (2.00 / 1)

Let's not get to antsy yet. We can't be sure that the percentage of AA participation is what they say it is in either state because I doubt that they have taken into account what's going on in the smaller rural parts of the state where Hillary is expected to clean up big.
